A series of coordinated operations by the Bangladesh Army in the hill districts of Khagrachhari has resulted in the death of an armed group member and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The operations were conducted in separate incidents in the Panchhari and Ramgarh upazilas, areas that have periodically witnessed security concerns linked to armed groups operating in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region.
According to an ISPR statement issued on Wednesday, the first operation took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Borokolk area of Panchhari upazila at around 2 pm. During the mission, army personnel came under fire from members of an armed group, prompting an exchange of gunfire. In the aftermath of the confrontation, two members of the group surrendered to the security forces. Authorities recovered two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and 132 rounds of ammunition from the scene.
A second operation was carried out on Wednesday morning at around 10 am in the Hajachhara area of Ramgarh upazila. In this engagement, a further exchange of gunfire occurred between the army and armed operatives. One member of the armed group was killed during the incident. From the site, security personnel recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, a pipe gun and 27 rounds of ammunition, along with other equipment.
In total, the two operations resulted in the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, three magazines and 159 rounds of ammunition, alongside additional locally used weapons and materials. The ISPR confirmed that all recovered items have been secured for further investigation and operational assessment.
The Chittagong Hill Tracts, which include Khagrachhari district, have long been an area of focus for security operations due to the presence of various armed groups operating in remote and forested terrain. Security forces have regularly conducted patrols and targeted operations aimed at curbing illegal arms possession and maintaining stability in the region.
Military authorities stated that operations against armed groups in the hill districts will continue as part of broader efforts to ensure public safety, protect civilian lives and support long-term peace in the region.
