India Elevates Dinesh Trivedi to Ministerial Protocol Status
India has accorded ministerial rank to its newly appointed High Commissioner to Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, in a move that applies strictly to protocol arrangements during official engagements. The decision has been formalised through an official memorandum issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ Public Security Division.
According to the memorandum released on Wednesday, the change places Trivedi on par with a Union Cabinet Minister within the official Table of Precedence, but only for ceremonial and protocol purposes. Authorities have clarified that this adjustment does not constitute a permanent alteration to the existing precedence structure.
The document further states that the arrangement is limited in scope and should not be interpreted as a revision of the standard hierarchy maintained by the Government of India. The order has been issued under the authority of senior officials within the ministry, with Kamlesh Ravidass named in the communication.
Dinesh Trivedi, a former Member of Parliament from Barrackpore, has previously served in India’s Union Council of Ministers, bringing extensive political and administrative experience to his diplomatic posting. He assumed charge as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh following his arrival in Dhaka on 5 June.
His appointment comes at a time when India and Bangladesh continue to maintain close diplomatic, economic, and cultural engagement across a wide range of sectors. The two neighbouring countries share longstanding ties shaped by geography, history, and people-to-people connections, with regular high-level exchanges forming a key part of bilateral relations.
Trivedi is expected to present his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin in Dhaka later this week, formally marking the start of his tenure in Bangladesh. Diplomatic protocol dictates that such presentation of credentials is a key step before an envoy fully assumes official responsibilities in the host country.
Beyond his political career, Trivedi is also known for his interest in Indian classical music and is an accomplished sitar player. He is regarded as someone familiar with the cultural landscape of both West Bengal and Bangladesh, which is often seen as an asset in his current diplomatic role given the shared linguistic and cultural heritage across the region.
The elevation of protocol status is seen as a ceremonial measure aimed at ensuring parity during high-level diplomatic interactions.
