Police in Dhaka’s Mirpur Model Police Station area have arrested 24 individuals, including two children in conflict with the law, during a special operation targeting crime-prone neighbourhoods as part of an ongoing drive against criminal activities in the capital.
The arrests were made on Saturday during a coordinated operation conducted by Mirpur Model Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The information was confirmed by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi.
According to the DMP, the special operation focused on several locations within the jurisdiction of Mirpur Model Police Station that have previously been identified as vulnerable to criminal activities. The operation was aimed at apprehending individuals allegedly involved in various offences and those wanted in connection with pending criminal cases.
Those arrested were identified as Sohag Hossain, 19; Mizan, 20; Jewel, 22; Jahidul Islam, also known as Polu Mia, 60; Rajan, 25; Nirab, 28; Russell, 28; Nur Alam, 32; A. Rahim, 42; Asaduzzaman Hejias, 52; Abdul Hai, 49; Sagar, 18; Rabiul, 18; Ramzan, 18; Yasin, 18; Mahmudul Hasan Antor, 26; Genius Sarkar, 27; Hamim, 22; Nahid, 22; Habib, 19; Haji Md Zahirul Islam, 52; Anwar Hossain, 34; and two children who were described by police as being in conflict with the law. In accordance with legal and ethical standards, the identities of the two children were not disclosed.
Police said the detainees include individuals accused in regular criminal cases as well as others suspected of involvement in various offences. However, authorities did not specify the exact nature of the allegations against each individual or disclose the offences for which they were arrested.
Following their arrest, the suspects were produced before the appropriate court for further legal proceedings in accordance with the country’s criminal justice process.
Law enforcement agencies in Dhaka periodically conduct special operations in areas considered vulnerable to criminal activity as part of wider efforts to maintain public order, apprehend wanted suspects and deter offences. Such drives often target individuals facing outstanding warrants or those allegedly linked to crimes including theft, robbery, narcotics offences and other violations of the law. Police generally intensify these operations based on intelligence information and local crime patterns.
Officials said the latest operation formed part of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s broader strategy to strengthen public safety and reinforce routine policing across the capital. While police have not released additional details regarding the evidence collected or the specific charges involved, they indicated that the investigation into the cases would continue.
The inclusion of two children among those detained means their cases will be dealt with under Bangladesh’s juvenile justice framework, which provides separate legal procedures for children in conflict with the law. Their identities have therefore been withheld in line with established legal practice.
Police have urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities and sharing information that may assist ongoing efforts to prevent crime. Authorities maintain that intelligence-based operations and community cooperation remain important components of maintaining law and order in densely populated urban areas such as Mirpur.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has not announced whether further operations will be conducted in the area, although officials indicated that similar drives against criminal activities will continue as part of regular policing initiatives.
