Police have arrested an alleged notorious criminal and suspected mugger known as “Red Munna” during a special operation in Dhaka’s Pallabi area, recovering a sharp knife from his possession, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The suspect, identified as Munna, also known as Red Munna, 36, was apprehended on Saturday afternoon during a targeted raid in the Bauniabad Muchipara area under Pallabi Police Station.
The arrest was confirmed by DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi, who said the operation was carried out following specific intelligence received by officers.
According to police, a team from Pallabi Police Station launched the raid in Section 11 of Bauniabad Muchipara after acting on confidential information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts. Officers arrested Munna during the operation and seized a sharp knife that was allegedly in his possession.
Police described Munna as an alleged leading criminal figure and a suspected mugger who had been involved in criminal activities in the area for an extended period. Authorities claim he had long been associated with offences including mugging and extortion, contributing to concerns over law and order in the locality.
According to the DMP, Munna has 10 criminal cases registered against him at Pallabi Police Station. The cases include allegations relating to narcotics offences, extortion, theft, assault, attempted murder, and violence against women and children. Police said all of the cases remain pending before the courts.
Authorities did not disclose whether the arrest was made in connection with any specific case or whether additional charges would be filed following the recovery of the weapon. The suspect is expected to be produced before the appropriate court to face legal proceedings in accordance with the law.
Special operations based on intelligence are regularly conducted by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in areas identified as vulnerable to criminal activities. Such drives are intended to apprehend wanted suspects, recover illegal weapons and deter offences including mugging, extortion and organised criminal activity.
Police frequently increase patrols and targeted enforcement measures in neighbourhoods where residents have reported recurring incidents of street crime. These operations form part of broader efforts to strengthen public safety, reassure local communities and prevent repeat offences by individuals with pending criminal cases.
Officials said intelligence gathering and community cooperation continue to play an important role in identifying suspects and carrying out successful operations. They also urged members of the public to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies to assist ongoing crime prevention efforts.
The DMP reiterated that similar enforcement drives will continue across Pallabi and other parts of the capital to maintain law and order. Police said they remain committed to taking legal action against individuals accused of criminal activities and ensuring that those facing charges are brought before the courts through due process.
The investigation into the case is continuing, and authorities have indicated that further legal action will be taken in accordance with the outcome of the inquiry and the existing cases pending against the suspect.
