Israel Orders Army to Hold Three West Bank Refugee Camps, Prevent Residents’ Return

Jerusalem, February 23, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Sunday that the army had “evacuated” three refugee camps in the northern occupied West Bank and would remain there for at least a year to prevent residents from returning.

“So far, 40,000 Palestinians have evacuated from the refugee camps of Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams, which are now empty of residents,” Katz stated. “I have instructed (troops) to prepare for a prolonged presence in the cleared camps for the coming year and to prevent the return of residents and the resurgence of terrorism.”

Escalating Tensions in the West Bank

The forced evacuation of these camps marks a significant escalation in Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank, a region that has seen increased violence and clashes in recent months. Israel claims that Palestinian militant groups use these camps as operational bases, while Palestinian leaders and human rights organizations condemn the mass displacement as a violation of international law.

Broader Context of the Conflict

The move comes amid rising tensions across the region, with ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza and frequent raids in the West Bank. Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams have been key flashpoints, with frequent Israeli raids targeting armed groups affiliated with Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other Palestinian factions.

Palestinian officials and international observers have warned that prolonged Israeli military control over these camps could further destabilize the region and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, as thousands of displaced residents are left without homes or basic services.

International Reactions and Humanitarian Concerns

The United Nations and various human rights organizations have previously expressed concerns over Israeli military actions in the West Bank, urging an end to forced displacements and advocating for a political solution to the conflict.

The situation remains fluid, and the prolonged Israeli military presence in these camps is likely to draw further scrutiny from the international community as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
