Sammilito Islami Bank PLC was created through the structural amalgamation of five private Islamic commercial lenders: EXIM Bank PLC, Social Islami Bank PLC, First Security Islami Bank PLC, Global Islami Bank PLC, and Union Bank PLC. The consolidation involved the full transfer of all assets and liabilities to a single state-backed institution, designed to stabilize the broader Sharia-compliant banking market.
To support this structural reorganization, a capital framework of BDT 35,000 crore was structured, combining BDT 20,000 crore from the Government with BDT 15,000 crore sourced from depositors.
Despite this significant capitalization, the bank inherited a substantial portfolio of classified investments from its predecessor banks. Reclaiming these delinquent accounts is a top operational imperative to build liquidity reserves, ensure full compliance with regulatory capital requirements, and guarantee timely disbursements to retail and corporate depositors.
The war-room will serve as a high-frequency monitoring hub, enabling executive management to coordinate recovery campaigns in real time:
Rigorous Portfolio Tracking: Continuous, dynamic surveillance of overdue exposures across the national branch network.
Large Borrower Focus: Customised, aggressive workout strategies tailored specifically to high-value defaulters.
Expedited Legal Recourse: Direct integration with internal and external legal teams to fast-track court proceedings and asset attachments.
Liquidity Optimization: Reinvesting recovered funds directly into operational liquid reserves to fortify depositor protections.
Addressing senior staff during the launch, Managing Director Abedur Rahman Sikder underlined that asset recovery must be treated as a pivotal institutional priority rather than a conventional clerical task.
“Collection and recovery should not be viewed merely as a routine banking activity; rather, it must be treated as one of our highest priorities for protecting depositors’ interests and supporting the bank’s financial recovery,” Mr Sikder remarked.
He emphasised that Sammilito Islami Bank PLC remains committed to upholding the highest standards of corporate governance, operational transparency, and financial integrity. Calling on all employees to carry out their duties with dedication and professionalism, Mr Sikder expressed confidence that the war-room’s focused, coordinated approach will achieve tangible results in investment recovery while rebuilding stakeholder confidence across the financial sector.
