In a coordinated overnight operation aimed at dismantling illicit drug networks, police in Comilla arrested 84 individuals across 45 designated raid points spanning all 18 police stations in the district. Law enforcement officials seized substantial quantities of contraband, including cannabis and methamphetamine pills locally known as yaba, during the simultaneous swoops.
On Wednesday afternoon, 19 August, all 84 suspects were presented before the court, which subsequently remanded them to judicial custody in Comilla Central Jail.
Addressing the media, Comilla Superintendent of Police Mohammad Anisuzzaman confirmed that the special operation was executed over a single night following precise intelligence inputs. He stated that the initiative is part of an ongoing drive to safeguard the youth and future generations from the destructive impact of narcotics, restore social order, and establish a safer, drug-free district.
The Superintendent emphasised that law enforcement agencies cannot eradicate the drug menace operating in isolation. Eradicating systemic narcotics distribution requires active public awareness and community cooperation alongside police action. He reiterated that the district police maintain a strict zero-tolerance policy against drug traffickers, suppliers, and syndicates, warning that similar targeted crackdowns will intensify across border routes and urban hotspots in the coming days.
Due to its geographical proximity to the eastern international border, Comilla remains a critical transit route for illicit drug smuggling into central Bangladesh. Law enforcement personnel routinely conduct targeted drives to intercept contraband shipments, dismantle local distribution networks, and curb transnational drug cartels. Police officials confirmed that intelligence-led surveillance across vulnerable border points and transit hubs will be further strengthened to prevent narcotics from entering the district.
