A man wanted in several murder cases and described by police as a listed criminal has been arrested in Lakshmipur while allegedly carrying a pistol looted from a police station, along with ammunition and a knife.
The arrested man has been identified as Md Nishan, also known as Chhoto Nishan, 30. He was detained on Tuesday afternoon in the Poddar Bazar area of the newly formed Chandraganj upazila in Lakshmipur district. Authorities said he is facing several murder cases filed with Chandraganj Police Station and has been sentenced to life imprisonment in multiple cases.
According to the Rapid Action Battalion, officers recovered a pistol believed to have been looted from Chandraganj Police Station after 5 August, 12 rounds of ammunition, a modern knife and a motorcycle from Nishan at the time of his arrest.
The arrest followed a targeted operation based on specific intelligence. Members of the Rapid Action Battalion-11 Noakhali camp had taken up positions in the Poddar Bazar area after receiving information about Nishan’s movements. When he reportedly sensed the presence of the security personnel, he attempted to escape on a motorcycle.
The officers pursued him and eventually detained him. A subsequent search of his person allegedly led to the recovery of the firearm, ammunition and knife.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar Kundu, acting company commander of the Rapid Action Battalion-11 Noakhali camp, said the force had been attempting to arrest Nishan through various means for a considerable period. The operation was eventually successful after officers received specific information about his whereabouts.
The recovery of a firearm allegedly taken from a police station adds a separate dimension to the case. Weapons and ammunition looted from police facilities can pose a serious security concern if they subsequently enter criminal networks or are used in further offences. The authorities have therefore been treating the recovery of such weapons as a priority.
The Rapid Action Battalion has filed a case with the police station as the complainant over the recovery of the looted firearm and ammunition. Further legal proceedings are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the possession of the weapon and its alleged connection with the earlier looting.
Chandraganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdur Rob said Nishan was already on the police’s list of wanted criminals and that officers had previously conducted several operations to arrest him.
Nishan was scheduled to be produced before a court on Wednesday. His arrest is expected to lead to further investigation into the murder cases against him, as well as the circumstances in which the looted firearm came into his possession.
