Protests erupted across Israel early on Tuesday morning, with demonstrators demanding an end to the war in Gaza and the immediate return of hostages held by militants. The rallies took place just hours before a crucial evening meeting of the Israeli security cabinet.
According to AFP journalists, protesters were seen blocking major roads in Tel Aviv. Many waved Israeli flags, while others held up pictures of the hostages, symbolising the urgency of their demands.
Israeli media reported additional demonstrations:
The protests were marked by both urgency and anger, as families of hostages insisted that the government prioritise negotiations over military escalation.
One of the most striking appeals came from Hagit Chen, whose son was abducted by militants in October 2023.
“There is an offer on the table. We demand that our leaders sit at the negotiation table and not get up until there is an agreement,”
— Hagit Chen, speaking via a statement issued by the Hostages’ Families Forum.
This sentiment echoed across the demonstrations, highlighting the families’ desperation for progress.
The official agenda of Tuesday’s cabinet session was not disclosed. However, local reports strongly suggest that discussions could centre on renewed negotiations for a ceasefire and a potential hostage release agreement.
Earlier this month, in early August, the cabinet approved a controversial plan for the military to take control of Gaza City. That decision sparked widespread fear for the safety of hostages and prompted a surge in nationwide protests, drawing tens of thousands into the streets.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has adopted a dual-track approach:
This has drawn criticism from protesters, who argue that military action could endanger the very hostages whose release the government is seeking.
Just days before Netanyahu’s announcement, Hamas declared it had accepted a new ceasefire proposal put forward by international mediators. The terms included:
| Ceasefire Proposal Key Points | Details |
| Duration | Initial 60-day period |
| Hostage Release | Staggered release of Israeli hostages |
| In Exchange For | Palestinian prisoners held by Israel |
| Mediators | Internationally backed negotiators (not publicly specified) |
This framework has been viewed by hostage families as the most tangible path forward, fuelling their calls for the government to commit fully to negotiations.
