At least twelve residents of Gurudaspur Upazila in Natore have fallen ill after consuming meat from a sick cow, local authorities reported on Thursday. Among the patients, three are in a serious condition and have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Several of those affected have developed boils and swelling on different parts of their bodies.
According to local sources, about a week ago, a cow owned by Abdul Gafur Sarkar in the Cholnali village of Dharabarisha Union suddenly became ill, exhibiting severe abdominal swelling. Subsequently, villagers reportedly slaughtered the animal and distributed the meat among themselves. Within a few days, individuals involved in cutting, cooking, or handling the meat began showing symptoms of illness, including pustular lesions. They later sought medical attention at nearby health facilities.
ASM Almach Ali, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, stated that six patients from Cholnali village had presented for treatment. Three of these patients, showing more severe symptoms, were referred to Rajshahi Medical College for specialised care. While laboratory tests are underway to confirm the exact nature of the illness, preliminary assessments suggest that the disease may be anthrax, likely transmitted through contact with or consumption of the infected cow’s meat.
Meanwhile, Md. Rokonuzzaman, the Upazila Livestock Officer, confirmed that the sick cow was slaughtered without prior notification to the livestock department, which complicates containment efforts. Some of the meat from the cow had been preserved, but these remnants were subsequently buried under official supervision to prevent further spread of the infection. He urged all livestock owners to immediately report any sick animals to authorities instead of slaughtering them secretly, emphasising that timely reporting is crucial to public health safety.
He added that approximately 25,000 cattle in the Upazila received anthrax vaccination last year. Following this incident, a rapid immunisation drive has been initiated in Cholnali village, and around 2,000 cattle have already been vaccinated. Authorities are working to ensure full coverage to prevent further cases.
The table below summarises key information about the outbreak and the response measures:
| Item | Number / Detail |
|---|---|
| Individuals fallen ill | 12 |
| Patients admitted to hospital | 3 |
| Patients treated locally | 6 |
| Cattle vaccinated last year | ~25,000 |
| Cattle vaccinated post-incident | ~2,000 |
| Village affected | Cholnali, Dharabarisha Union |
| Suspected disease | Anthrax (Tṛkā) |
Health and livestock officials emphasised that early detection and reporting of diseased animals are critical to prevent anthrax outbreaks. They also called for villagers to avoid handling or consuming meat from sick cattle, urging immediate medical consultation for anyone showing symptoms.
The incident highlights the ongoing need for vaccination drives and public awareness campaigns in rural areas, where zoonotic diseases can quickly pose serious health risks.
