In a grave violation of the sanctity of the press, an organised group, allegedly involved in the illicit narcotics trade, forcibly entered the Darshana Press Club in the Damurhuda Upazila of Chuadanga on the night of Friday, 24 April 2026. The assailants reportedly subjected a senior journalist to physical violence and destroyed communication equipment, an incident that has triggered widespread indignation and protests amongst the local media community.
The attack has resulted in a state of heightened tension in the region, with journalists and civil society members demanding the immediate apprehension of the perpetrators. According to eyewitnesses and administrative staff at the club, the incident unfolded as a targeted act of intimidation against the press.
According to reports provided by press club sources, the disturbance commenced at approximately 11:00 pm on Friday. A group of individuals, identified as local narcotics traffickers and led by an individual named Chanchal (the son of Atar Ali from Azimpur village), reportedly gathered near the club premises in an intoxicated state. The group initially engaged in disorderly conduct, directing offensive language and verbal abuse at the journalists present.
Upon being informed of the situation by the office assistant, Abbas Ali, the club’s Office Secretary, Abdul Hannan, intervened to protest against the harassment. In response, the group reportedly became aggressive and struck Mr Hannan on the head. Seeking safety, the journalist retreated into the interior of the press club building.
However, the sanctuary of the office provided little protection. Moments later, a group consisting of ten to twelve individuals led by Chanchal forcibly breached the entrance. It is alleged that the attackers deliberately extinguished the lights to facilitate the assault under the cover of darkness. Mr Hannan was subsequently subjected to indiscriminate physical violence, and his mobile telephone—a critical tool for his professional duties—was smashed during the altercation, causing widespread panic in the immediate vicinity.
Following the attack, the Darshana Press Club convened an emergency meeting at 12:30 pm on Saturday, 25 April 2026, to formalise their stance against the violence. The session was presided over by Awal Hossain, the President of the Local Journalists’ Association. Other prominent attendees included:
Ikramul Haque Pipul, President of the Darshana Press Club.
Moniruzzaman Suman, General Secretary.
Moniruzzaman Dhiru and Zahidul Islam, former presidents and senior members.
The leadership collectively condemned the attack, noting that the press club is a symbol of independent journalism and democratic expression. The speakers characterised the incursion as a “premeditated terrorist act” designed to silence the media through fear and physical coercion.
In his presidential address, Awal Hossain stated:
“This is not merely an assault on an individual journalist; it is a calculated attempt to stifle the collective voice of the media. We are currently preparing to initiate formal legal proceedings. Should the authorities fail to take immediate and decisive action, the journalistic community will be compelled to launch a rigorous and sustained programme of protest.”
The Inspector (Officer-in-Charge) of Darshana Police Station, Mehedi Hasan, confirmed that he led a police team to the site shortly after being notified of the disturbance. The OC stated that law enforcement has conducted an initial inspection of the crime scene and is awaiting a formal written complaint from the victims.
“We have visited the Darshana Press Club to assess the situation,” the OC remarked. “Once a formal allegation is lodged, we shall proceed with strict legal measures against those identified as being involved in this criminal activity.”
The incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of regional journalists when reporting on or encountering organised crime syndicates. As of Saturday evening, the local administration remains on alert, and the Darshana Press Club has reiterated its demand for the exemplary punishment of the accused to ensure the future safety of media professionals in Chuadanga.
