Bangladesh Head Coach Blames Batters For Series Loss

Bangladesh have suffered a defeat against Australia in the third and final match of the three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series. On Sunday, the Australian team secured a comprehensive seven-wicket victory to conclude the series. Following the completion of the final fixture, Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons addressed the media during a post-match press conference to assess his team’s performance and the overall outcome of the series.

When questioned about whether the nature of the series defeat was frustrating, Simmons explicitly expressed his disappointment, noting that the performance fell significantly short of the standards set by the team in their recent T20I campaigns. He highlighted a stark contrast between the competitive spirit shown in the second match and the poor execution observed in the first and final matches of the series, particularly pointing out the failure of the batting department.

Disappointment in the Batting Unit

Simmons stated that despite losing the second match, he had been satisfied with the attitude displayed by the squad. In that particular fixture, Bangladesh were chasing a target against a highly rated opponent like Australia and managed to score 190 runs, which the coach deemed a commendable competitive effort. However, he noted that the performances in the first match and the final match were highly unsatisfactory, specifically because the batting unit failed to establish a competitive total, leaving the bowling department with insufficient runs to defend.

The head coach emphasised that the primary issue extended beyond the series loss itself, focusing instead on the team’s failure to execute their intended style of play. While acknowledging that the strategic objective is to score runs quickly, Simmons stressed that the players must also learn to adapt their gameplay according to the specific match situations.

Lack of Responsibility and Top-Order Collapse

According to the head coach, the batting order collapsed completely following the dismissal of opening batter Tanzid Hasan Tamim. Simmons observed that after Tamim’s wicket fell, subsequent batsmen threw away their wickets without showing proper application on the pitch. He pointed out a critical lack of responsibility among the middle-order players, stating that someone needed to anchor the innings.

Out of the entire batting lineup in the final match, Simmons singled out Towhid Hridoy as the only player who took responsibility and attempted to steady the innings. The failure of the other batsmen to support Hridoy or build meaningful partnerships prevented Bangladesh from setting a challenging target for the Australian side.

The Absence of Liton Das

Addressing questions regarding the absence of seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Das, the head coach acknowledged that the team naturally missed his batting skill and class on the field. However, Simmons maintained a pragmatic stance on the situation, asserting that injuries are an inherent part of international cricket and the team must learn to perform effectively regardless of personnel absences.

Simmons further remarked that even if Liton Das had been playing, a batsman can get dismissed at any moment by a single good delivery. Consequently, the remaining players in the squad must possess the capability to manage the pressure and guide the team through difficult periods.
