Bangladesh has recorded a substantial surge in remittance inflows, with expatriate workers sending home 2.238 billion US dollars during the first 23 days of June. Calculated at the current exchange rate of 122 Taka per dollar, this amounts to over 270 billion Taka. On Wednesday, 24 June, the central bank spokesperson, Arif Hossain Khan, confirmed the latest figures, which provide a timely boost to the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
This financial momentum translates into an impressive average daily inflow of 97.3 million dollars. Central bank data highlights a noticeable year-on-year growth. During the exact same period last June, expatriate workers sent home 2.209 billion dollars. The current figures reflect a steady upward trajectory in formal banking channel usage by non-resident Bangladeshis, driven largely by festive spending around the recent Eid-ul-Adha celebrations.
A broader analysis of the current financial year reveals an even more robust performance for the country’s economy. Cumulative remittance receipts from July up to 23 June reached 34.995 billion dollars. In comparison, the total remittance collected during the corresponding period of the 2024–25 fiscal year stood at 29.715 billion dollars. This marks a significant growth rate of 17.80 per cent over the year. Financial analysts attribute this sustainable growth to policy changes implemented by the central bank, including a flexible exchange rate mechanism and enhanced legal channel incentives.
The momentum built up in June follows a historic performance in the preceding month. In May, Bangladesh welcomed 2.97 billion dollars in remittances, valued at approximately 362.34 billion Taka. This spectacular figure was recorded as the second-highest monthly remittance inflow in the history of the nation. The sustained influx through June offers vital stability for the macroeconomy, helping ease domestic foreign currency liquidity pressures and supporting international balance of payments.
