Bus operations in Bhola’s Charfassion Upazila have resumed following the suspension of an indefinite strike called by the District Bus Workers’ Union. The strike, affecting five internal bus routes across the district, was initially prompted by alleged assaults on bus workers and vandalism of buses by CNG-powered auto-rickshaw drivers.
The protest disrupted services throughout the district on Sunday, but normal operations resumed on Monday evening after assurances from local authorities that the matter would be addressed.
The dispute originated on Sunday, shortly before 1 p.m., near the TB School area in Charfassion Upazila town. Bus workers allege that CNG auto-rickshaw drivers forcibly removed buses from the private depot operated by the Bhola Bus Owners’ Association. In the process, workers claim they were physically attacked, and damage was caused to buses and depot property.
In response, the District Bus Workers’ Union immediately called for an indefinite strike across all five internal routes, demanding legal action against the perpetrators. Services were brought to a halt, leaving commuters stranded and creating significant disruption throughout the district.
By Monday evening, bus operations resumed following intervention by district authorities. District Commissioner Dr. Shamim Rahman and Superintendent of Police Shahidullah Kawsar reportedly assured the union leadership that the incident would be properly investigated and justice would be pursued. At the union’s request, the strike was officially suspended.
As part of ongoing conflict resolution, a high-level discussion is scheduled for Tuesday, 10 March, at the District Commissioner’s office. Attendees are expected to include representatives from bus owners, bus workers, and the CNG Owners’ Association, alongside senior officials from law enforcement and local administration.
District Bus Depot Officer Asim Dutta confirmed that the incident led to significant disruption and damage, underscoring the need for swift administrative intervention. He praised the union and authorities for reaching a resolution to resume services promptly.

District Commissioner Dr. Shamim Rahman emphasised that discussions are ongoing to ensure that both parties’ concerns are addressed, and that measures are in place to prevent similar conflicts in the future.
The incident highlights continuing tensions between different transport operators in Bhola, particularly involving traditional bus services and CNG-powered auto-rickshaws. Authorities are expected to monitor compliance and facilitate dialogue to safeguard the safety of workers and maintain uninterrupted public transport services.
