A 32-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Dhaka’s Shantibagh area late on Monday night after reportedly attempting to intervene in local drug use. The victim, Sekandar Ali, was declared dead upon arrival at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after sustaining multiple severe injuries from a sharp weapon.

Incident Details

The attack occurred at approximately 11 p.m. in the Bangari Lane neighbourhood of Shantibagh. According to family members, Sekandar Ali, a resident of Rampara Olnobazar, lived with his wife, Mahfuza, and their three children. Originally from Gajipur village in Titash Upazila, Comilla District, he earned his livelihood operating two auto-rickshaws stationed in Shahjahanpur’s Bangari Lane.

Family accounts indicate that the assailants, identified as Mamun, also known as Bullet Mamun, his brother-in-law Hannan, and several accomplices, launched a premeditated attack against Sekandar. Witnesses reported that the confrontation began when Sekandar intervened to prevent their drug consumption. He was struck multiple times with a knife and other sharp implements, sustaining critical injuries. Local residents quickly transported him to the hospital, but he succumbed to his wounds despite emergency medical care.

Alleged Motive

Sekandar’s relatives allege that the attackers were known drug dealers in the area. Previous disputes reportedly arose when Sekandar attempted to obstruct their illegal activities. The family believes that the attack was a continuation of this ongoing conflict, with the perpetrators seeking revenge for past interventions.

Police Response

Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed that Sekandar’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Reports indicate multiple stab wounds to the head and various parts of the body. Shahjahanpur police have launched a formal investigation into the incident, including the identification and apprehension of the suspects involved.

Authorities have urged local residents to come forward with information, emphasising that such acts of violence, especially related to drug-related conflicts, will not be tolerated. The case highlights the ongoing challenges in Dhaka’s residential areas, where vigilant citizens attempting to counter illegal activities may face lethal retaliation.

The tragic death of Sekandar Ali underscores the risks faced by individuals confronting criminal elements in their communities and calls for stricter enforcement against drug-related violence.
