Bangladesh’s campaign in the Women’s Asian Cup ended in disappointment after a 4-0 defeat to Uzbekistan in their final group stage match, held in Perth, Australia. The loss marked the end of the tournament for the national side and raised questions about the future of head coach Peter Butler’s tenure.
Speaking at the post-match press conference on Monday, Butler, an experienced English coach, hinted that he may step down from his role. “I am returning home for now,” Butler said. “Once there, I will make decisions regarding my future. This has been on my mind for quite some time.” The coach is scheduled to travel back to England next week.
Butler offered a measured assessment of the 4-0 defeat, noting that Bangladesh did not play poorly. “Bangladesh played decent football and created opportunities. However, when facing a team 63 FIFA ranking places above and physically stronger, the difference becomes apparent,” he said. He highlighted structural and technological gaps, adding, “Teams like Uzbekistan have advanced video analysis tools and cameras to break down matches. Bangladesh lacks this equipment, and it contributes to the performance gap.”
Regarding the three goals conceded in the second half, Butler explained, “Defensive weaknesses became obvious at that stage. A couple of players appeared to give up, which was disappointing to witness.”
The coach stressed that the long-term improvement of women’s football in Bangladesh depends on sustained investment and structured planning. “Attention must be paid to video equipment, regular training camps, and comprehensive match analysis,” he said. “Football at the Asian level is much tougher than in the SAFF region, so preparation must match that standard.”
Butler also acknowledged that a degree of fortune played a role in Bangladesh’s participation in the tournament but emphasised the need to confront reality. “Competing at this level without adequate logistical support and planning is challenging. I have given my best, but now it is time to reconsider the future,” he added.

The Asian Cup campaign underscored both the progress and limitations of Bangladeshi women’s football. Butler repeatedly highlighted the need for systemic changes, including investment in training facilities, modern equipment, and structured preparation programmes.
“Improving performance at the Asian level is not just about talent; it is about preparation, resources, and consistency,” he stated. His candid remarks about logistical limitations and resource gaps reflect broader challenges faced by developing football nations.
While the future of Peter Butler remains uncertain, his tenure has drawn attention to the importance of infrastructure, technology, and strategic planning in elevating Bangladesh’s women’s football on the continental stage. The football federation now faces critical decisions regarding leadership, resource allocation, and long-term development to bridge the gap with Asia’s stronger teams.
