Murder in Jatrabari: Youth Found with Severed Tendons

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police have launched a high-priority homicide investigation following the grim discovery of a young man’s body in the early hours of Monday morning. The victim, identified as Mehedi Hasan Opu, 25, was found within the sprawling confines of the Jatrabari wholesale vegetable and fish market (Kanchabazar), a hub of commercial activity that remains active throughout the night.

Officers from the Jatrabari Police Station were alerted to the scene shortly after midnight on Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim in a pool of blood with horrific injuries. Most notably, the tendons in his legs had been systematically severed—a hallmark of targeted, "punishment-style" violence often associated with local turf wars.

Mohammad Raju, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station, confirmed that the body bore multiple signs of physical trauma in addition to the fatal incisions. On Monday morning, the remains were transported to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for a formal post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Victim Profile and Possible Motives

The victim, originally from the Rajapur area of Jhalakathi and the son of the late Badsha Mia, had been living in the capital while working as a labourer at a local fish warehouse. His nephew, Ripon, who spoke to the press at the DMCH morgue, noted that Opu was also an active supporter of the Sramik Dal, the labour wing of a major political party.

While the investigation is in its nascent stages, detectives are focusing on a "turf war" theory. Initial intelligence suggests that the brutal nature of the killing points towards a dispute over the control of local illicit drug trade territories.
