Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to mark Ukrainian Independence Day, amid growing international calls for an end to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
“On this Ukrainian Independence Day, and at this critical moment in their nation’s history, Canada is stepping up our support and our efforts towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” Carney wrote on X (formerly Twitter) as he landed in the capital.
Carney was invited to Kyiv as a “special guest” to commemorate the occasion, according to Canadian broadcaster CBC.
“Canada’s support for Ukraine is unwavering and we are with you every step of the way, in your fight to defend your sovereignty, and to realise your dreams for your country,” he said in a video posted on X shortly after his arrival.
Carney’s visit occurs three years into the conflict, with Russian forces continuing slow territorial gains. On Saturday, Moscow announced it had taken control of two villages in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
The visit also coincides with fading prospects for a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a solution championed by US President Donald Trump as part of efforts to end the war.
