A seven-year-old girl was found dead in Manikganj’s Sadar উপজিলা on 17 April 2026, triggering widespread unrest that culminated in a violent mob assault, leaving two people dead and another critically injured.
The victim, Atika Akter, a first-grade pupil and daughter of Duddu Mia and Arifa Akter, had gone missing the previous afternoon while attending a local pre-wedding gaye holud ceremony in the Bonparil Southpara area under Hatipara Union. According to police and local residents, she had been playing with other children when she suddenly disappeared at approximately 4:00 p.m. on 16 April.
Her family initiated an extensive search after failing to locate her. The matter quickly gained traction within the community, with announcements made via loudspeakers and appeals circulated on social media in an effort to trace the missing child.
A key development came when Atika’s six-year-old cousin, Ali, reported seeing her walking away with a neighbour, a 15-year-old boy named Naim. When questioned, Naim allegedly directed villagers to a nearby maize field. At around 10:00 p.m., locals discovered Atika’s body in that field, bound hand and foot.
Preliminary indications suggest that the motive behind the killing may have been robbery, as the child was reportedly wearing gold ornaments at the time of her disappearance. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact circumstances pending a full investigation.
The discovery of the body sparked immediate outrage among residents. An enraged crowd reportedly attacked Naim’s home, vandalising property and assaulting individuals suspected of involvement. During the ensuing violence, Naim’s father, Pannu Mia (45), an auto-rickshaw driver, and his uncle Fazlu (28) were beaten to death. Another family member, Najmul (22), sustained critical injuries and was subsequently admitted to the 250-bed Manikganj General Hospital.
Police from Manikganj Sadar Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and brought the situation under control. Additional law enforcement personnel have since been deployed in the area to prevent further unrest.
Officer-in-Charge Md. Ekram Hossain confirmed that Atika’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination. He stated that those responsible for both the child’s killing and the subsequent mob violence would be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
