Chinese National Travels to Itna for Love

A relationship initiated through a digital dating application has culminated in a cross-border journey, as a Chinese national travelled approximately 7,000 kilometres to visit a remote village in the Haor region of Bangladesh. The individual arrived in Kishoreganj District to meet his partner, drawing significant attention from the local community.

Origins of the Cross-Border Relationship

The individual has been identified as Gao Weiyan, a resident of Xinxiang city within the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. Approximately two years ago, he established online contact with Jhuma Akhter, a young woman residing in Moralpara within the Krishtapur village of Chauganga Union, located in the Itna Upazila of Kishoreganj.

Their initial interactions commenced via social media platforms and dating applications. Over a twenty-four-month period, these digital conversations progressed from casual acquaintance into a formal romantic relationship. Despite substantial geographical, linguistic, and cultural variations, the couple maintained regular communication via video calls, exchanging details regarding their respective families, traditions, and future plans.

Arrival in Kishoreganj and Local Reception

To progress the relationship, Gao Weiyan arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday night, 16 May 2026. After landing in Dhaka, he undertook a long overland journey directly to the remote, water-locked Haor area of Itna to visit Jhuma Akhter’s family residence.

The presence of a foreign national in the rural village generated widespread curiosity. By Sunday morning, 17 May 2026, large groups of local residents gathered outside the family home to catch a glimpse of the visitor, with many recording photographs and videos that subsequently circulated widely on social media platforms. Despite the language barrier, local witnesses noted that Gao Weiyan engaged politely with the villagers and expressed appreciation for the hospitality and natural landscape of the Haor region.

Family Position and Administrative Context

Jhuma Akhter is currently enrolled as a student at a local Kamil Madrasah. According to official birth registration records, she is of legal adult age. Her family members have expressed a positive outlook regarding the relationship, confirming that the couple have communicated transparently over a long period and are evaluating their future options collectively.

The event has produced varied reactions within Chauganga Union, as detailed below:

Perspective Category Community and Administrative Responses
Supporters’ View Regard the journey as a modern example of cross-cultural dedication facilitated by digital technology.
Cautious View Expressed concerns regarding long-term cultural adaptation, linguistic differences, and legal compliance.
Local Community Demand Requested strict adherence to international marriage laws, document verification, and administrative protocols.
Official Administrative Stance Confirmed verification of the event and pledged necessary support subject to legal compliance.

The administrative authorities have formally acknowledged the situation. Makhan Chandra Sutradhar, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Itna, stated:

“We have heard about the matter and, upon investigation, have found it to be true. Since this involves an international relationship and the possibility of marriage, everything must be conducted in compliance with existing legal frameworks. The administration will extend the necessary cooperation in this regard.”
