A tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Aricha Highway in Manikganj district has claimed the lives of a husband and wife who were travelling by motorcycle. The fatal collision occurred on Thursday afternoon near the Borongail bus stand in Shibaloy upazila, an area known for heavy traffic and frequent highway congestion.
The deceased have been identified as Monayem Khan, 50, a rural medical practitioner, and his wife, Jyotsna Akter, 45. According to police and local witnesses, the couple had been travelling from Dhaka to their ancestral home in Faridpur district when their motorcycle was struck during a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre involving larger vehicles on the highway.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Harun Or Rashid of Borongail Highway Police Station confirmed the incident. He stated that Monayem Khan had set out from the Dakshinkhan area of Dhaka earlier in the day with his wife riding pillion on the motorcycle. Their journey was intended to take them to their family residence in Faridpur.
As they approached the Borongail bus stand area on the busy Dhaka–Aricha Highway, a passenger bus reportedly attempted to overtake a goods-laden truck travelling ahead of it. During this manoeuvre, the bus veered dangerously close to the motorcycle and struck it, causing the riders to lose control and fall onto the roadway.
The impact proved fatal for Monayem Khan, who died at the scene due to severe injuries sustained in the collision. Local residents and passers-by quickly rushed to assist the injured couple and alerted emergency services.
Jyotsna Akter, who was critically injured in the accident, was rescued and transported to the Manikganj 250-Bed District Hospital. Despite receiving emergency medical treatment, she later succumbed to her injuries while undergoing care.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to secure the area and manage traffic flow along the highway. The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to the hospital morgue pending further legal procedures and the arrival of family members.
Authorities have already detained the truck involved in the incident for investigation. However, the passenger bus responsible for the collision reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident. Law enforcement officials are currently working to identify and locate the vehicle and its driver.
OC Harun Or Rashid stated that legal proceedings are underway and that further action will be taken once the investigation determines the precise circumstances surrounding the crash.
