The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a weather alert warning of possible gusty winds, rainfall, and thunderstorms across several regions of the country, particularly during the late-night hours. According to the advisory released for inland river ports, temporary storms may affect parts of Bangladesh until 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday (11 March).
The warning specifically highlights Rajshahi, Jashore, and Sylhet, where strong winds accompanied by rain or thunderstorms may occur. Meteorologists predict that winds could blow from the west or north-west at speeds between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour, creating the potential for short but intense weather disturbances.
Such conditions can disrupt river transport and pose risks for small vessels operating on inland waterways. Authorities have therefore advised river ports and boat operators to remain cautious and monitor weather updates closely.
| Region | Possible Weather Conditions | Wind Direction | Wind Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rajshahi | Rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds | West / North-West | 45–60 km/h |
| Jashore | Rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds | West / North-West | 45–60 km/h |
| Sylhet | Rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds | West / North-West | 45–60 km/h |
In its 120-hour weather outlook issued from 6:00 p.m., the meteorological department explained that an extended trough of low pressure currently lies over West Bengal and adjoining areas. At the same time, the seasonal low-pressure system remains active over the southern Bay of Bengal.
The combined influence of these atmospheric systems is expected to generate scattered rainfall or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty winds in parts of several administrative divisions. These include:
Rangpur
Rajshahi
Dhaka
Mymensingh
Khulna
Barishal
Chattogram
Sylhet
Although the rainfall is not expected to be widespread, isolated locations in these divisions may experience brief but intense showers and lightning activity.
Meteorologists have also indicated that the changing weather pattern may bring a slight drop in daytime temperatures across the country. Day temperatures could fall by 1–2°C, offering temporary relief from the recent warm conditions. However, night-time temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged, maintaining the current seasonal pattern.
| Temperature Trend | Expected Change |
|---|---|
| Daytime temperature | Decrease by 1–2°C |
| Night-time temperature | Little or no change |
Weather officials have urged people, particularly those involved in river transportation, fishing, and outdoor activities, to remain alert during the forecast period. Sudden gusts and lightning could pose risks to small vessels and exposed structures.
While the expected storms are likely to be short-lived and localised, authorities recommend staying updated with official weather bulletins to ensure safety.
The latest advisory reflects the typical transition in early pre-monsoon weather patterns, when shifting atmospheric conditions over the Bay of Bengal and neighbouring regions frequently produce brief thunderstorms across Bangladesh.
