Bangladesh has formally requested special permission or a temporary waiver from the United States to import crude oil from Russia, following in the footsteps of India, which has already received similar authorisation. The announcement was made by Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury after a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen on Wednesday (11 March) at the minister’s office in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
Speaking to the press, Minister Chowdhury said:
“The United States has already granted India a temporary waiver for importing Russian oil. Bangladesh has requested the same opportunity. If this waiver is approved, it would provide substantial support to our economy.”
He added that the request has been formally forwarded to Washington for consideration, and the government is awaiting a response. The waiver, if granted, would allow Bangladesh to secure energy supplies without contravening existing U.S. sanctions on Russia, mitigating potential economic pressures caused by global oil market volatility.
During the meeting, the minister highlighted the current uncertainties in the international energy markets, particularly regarding oil and gas supply.
“The global energy market is facing significant uncertainty, and securing reliable energy sources has become critical for Bangladesh’s economic and energy security,” Chowdhury stated.
The talks also covered opportunities to expand bilateral trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States. In addition, discussions touched upon initiatives to enhance the capacity and efficiency of various government agencies, reinforcing the government’s broader development strategy.
The potential waiver aligns with Bangladesh’s efforts to ensure energy security amid rising global oil prices and geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains. Securing Russian crude at competitive terms could help stabilise domestic fuel costs, support industrial growth, and maintain economic resilience.
| Country | U.S. Waiver Status | Purpose | Potential Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | Granted | Import Russian oil | Support energy security, lower import costs |
| Bangladesh | Requested | Import Russian oil | Expected to boost economic stability if approved |
Minister Chowdhury emphasised that, in addition to energy concerns, the meeting focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and institutional capacity building.
“We have asked for similar opportunities as India received, and the matter will now be considered in Washington. We hope it will be approved, which would significantly benefit Bangladesh’s economy,” he noted.
With the global oil market facing heightened uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, Bangladesh’s proactive approach to securing a waiver reflects its strategic priority to protect the nation’s energy security and economic stability while deepening diplomatic and economic ties with the United States.
