Bangladesh Bank has issued fresh directives urging all banks in the country to exercise prudence in electricity and fuel consumption. The move comes in response to global geopolitical uncertainties that have heightened concerns over potential disruptions in energy supply. The central bank emphasised that judicious use of energy is now imperative to safeguard national resources.
On Wednesday, 11 March, Bangladesh Bank released a circular outlining a series of measures for bank headquarters, branches, and sub-branches aimed at promoting energy-efficient operations. The circular highlighted that current global conditions pose a risk of interruptions in international fuel supply chains, which could lead to shortages. In line with government efforts to implement cost-saving measures, the banking sector has also been instructed to reduce unnecessary energy use.
Key instructions outlined in the circular include:
Minimise Electrical Equipment Use – Lights, fans, and air conditioning units should only be operated as required.
Prioritise Natural Light – Daytime operations should leverage daylight to reduce electricity consumption.
Limit Official Vehicle Use – Travel for official and personal purposes should be minimised, with staff encouraged to use public transport or car-sharing schemes where possible.
Reduce Generator Fuel Use – Generators should only operate when essential.
Control Decorative and Promotional Lighting – Unnecessary decorative lighting should be avoided, and electronic display boards should not run outside designated hours.
The circular also reminded banks to strictly follow previous energy-saving directives issued on 7 September 2022 concerning electricity use and air-conditioning management.
The table below summarises the key energy-saving measures for banks:
| Area of Focus | Directive | Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Equipment | Limit use of lights, fans, and AC units | Reduce electricity consumption |
| Natural Light | Maximise use of daylight | Lower reliance on artificial lighting |
| Official Vehicles | Restrict trips, encourage public transport | Save fuel and reduce emissions |
| Generators | Operate only when necessary | Conserve diesel and energy |
| Decorative & Promotional Lighting | Avoid unnecessary use, restrict display boards | Reduce energy wastage |
Bangladesh Bank officials emphasised that, given the current volatility in global energy markets, the financial sector must ensure efficient energy use. Adherence to these guidelines is expected to enhance operational sustainability, reduce energy costs, and contribute to environmental conservation.
By implementing these measures, banks across the country are poised to become more energy-conscious and responsible, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable resource management. The directives mark a proactive step in preparing the banking sector for potential supply challenges while promoting cost-efficient and environmentally responsible practices.
