A young man has died and three others remain hospitalised after allegedly consuming excessive alcohol during a Holi celebration in Atrai upazila of Naogaon district, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as Naeem, 23, passed away while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Local police said the incident occurred during festivities marking the Hindu religious festival of Holi in a village under the Bishā Union of Atrai.

According to Abdul Karim, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Atrai Police Station, preliminary findings suggest that the young man’s death was linked to excessive alcohol consumption during the celebration. Police have since visited the site and indicated that legal procedures are underway.

Incident During Festival Gathering

Residents of Dubai village, where the incident took place, said the Holi festival was being celebrated on Tuesday with traditional rituals, music, and gatherings organised by members of the local Sanatan (Hindu) community. During the festivities, a group of four friends reportedly consumed alcohol together.

Shortly after drinking, all four men began to experience severe physical distress, prompting alarm among villagers. Witnesses said the group showed symptoms including dizziness, vomiting, and extreme weakness, suggesting possible alcohol poisoning or consumption of unsafe liquor.

Local residents rushed the victims to the Atrai Upazila Health Complex for immediate medical assistance. However, as their conditions deteriorated, doctors referred them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.

Despite medical intervention, Naeem succumbed to his condition at approximately 5:00 pm on Wednesday, according to hospital sources.

Others Undergoing Treatment

Three other individuals involved in the incident remain under medical care. They have been identified as residents of the same village:

Hospital officials reported that the three survivors are being monitored closely and are receiving necessary treatment. Their conditions were not immediately disclosed in detail, though sources indicated they were admitted after showing symptoms consistent with acute intoxication.

Police Investigation Underway

Law enforcement authorities have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. While initial reports attribute the death to excessive alcohol consumption, investigators are also considering the possibility that the liquor consumed may have been adulterated or locally produced, which has been known to cause severe poisoning in similar incidents across the region.

OC Abdul Karim stated that police officers had already visited the location where the alcohol was consumed and were gathering statements from witnesses and residents.

“We have learned primarily that the young man died after consuming excessive alcohol during the Holi festival,” he said. “Three others are still receiving treatment. We have inspected the scene and are continuing our inquiry. Necessary legal steps will be taken.”

Broader Concerns Over Festival Safety

The incident has sparked concern among local residents regarding safety during festive gatherings, particularly when alcohol is involved. In many rural areas of Bangladesh, illegal or homemade alcoholic beverages occasionally circulate during celebrations, raising the risk of poisoning or overdose.

Community leaders in the area have urged greater awareness and caution during such events to prevent further tragedies.

Authorities said further details would be released once the investigation is completed and medical reports are reviewed.
