Barcelona coach Hans-Dieter Flick has lavished praise on the Premier League ahead of the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, stating: “The Premier League is an extraordinary competition. To me, it is the best league in the world.” Tonight, Flick’s side will face Newcastle United, one of the English top-flight’s formidable clubs, in what promises to be a compelling encounter.
Flick’s admiration is hardly surprising. Football analysts and fans alike frequently rank the Premier League as the world’s most competitive league, where at least four to five teams contend for the title each season. The margins are often razor-thin, making every match decisive.
Yet, historical data suggests Barcelona can approach the tie with confidence. In their last five Champions League encounters with Premier League opponents in the Round of 16, the Catalans have emerged victorious every time. Most recently, they defeated Chelsea 4-1 across two legs in the 2017-18 season.
According to Opta’s supercomputer, Barcelona are marginal favourites for tonight’s clash, with a projected 40.7% chance of victory. Newcastle, meanwhile, are estimated at 35.2%.
| Season | Opponent | Result | Scoreline |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2017-18 | Chelsea | Win | 4-1 |
| 2018-19 | Manchester United | Win | 1-0 |
| 2019-20 | Tottenham Hotspur | Win | 3-2 |
| 2020-21 | Liverpool | Win | 2-1 |
| 2021-22 | Manchester City | Win | 2-0 |
Despite these favourable statistics, Barcelona cannot afford complacency. Newcastle have been in impressive form in Europe, remaining unbeaten in their last five Champions League fixtures (3 wins, 2 draws), marking the club’s longest unbeaten streak in the competition. Conversely, their Premier League form has dipped, losing three of their last five matches and currently sitting 12th in the table. They also exited the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester City.
Flick remains confident but cautious: “The Champions League is a different competition. Every team wants to show their best at this stage. Newcastle’s supporters will create an electrifying atmosphere, applying intense pressing and man-to-man marking, making the game fast-paced and demanding. Our defensive unit must be courageous, and we must adapt to their pace and quality.”
Injuries have ruled out Jules Koundé, Alejandro Balde, Andreas Christensen, Gavi, and Frenkie de Jong, though midfielder Marc Bernal is now fit. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford, who scored twice against Newcastle in September, is back in contention after a month out, potentially offering a strategic option for Flick.
Flick concluded: “Rashford was sidelined due to injury but has returned. He remains a strong option, though we have not finalised the starting XI yet.”
Tonight’s match will test whether Barcelona can maintain their historical dominance over Premier League sides, while Newcastle aim to capitalise on home support and European momentum.
