Leaders of the Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) met with Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon yesterday to discuss the pressing challenges and opportunities within the country’s housing sector. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works in Dhaka, aimed to address ongoing issues affecting housing projects and explore pathways for sectoral development.

The REHAB delegation was led by President Md. Wahiduzzaman and included senior members such as Senior Vice President Liakat Ali Bhuiya, Vice President (First) Lion M. M. Auwal, a former Member of Parliament, and Vice President Engr. Abdul Latif. From the ministry, Secretary Md. Nazrul Islam and other senior officials attended, underscoring the importance of the dialogue.

During the discussions, REHAB representatives highlighted a number of critical concerns currently affecting the housing sector. Foremost among these was the implementation of the Detailed Area Plan (DAP), which has reportedly led to a significant reduction in the number of units in new housing projects. REHAB officials noted that certain DAP regulations, while aimed at urban planning and sustainability, have inadvertently constrained project capacity, potentially slowing the growth of the housing sector.

Minister Sumon listened attentively to the concerns raised and requested that REHAB submit a detailed written proposal outlining the issues and possible solutions. He emphasised that a collaborative approach between the government and private developers was essential to ensure the sector’s stability and continued growth.

In response, REHAB President Md. Wahiduzzaman confirmed that the association would prepare a comprehensive report addressing current challenges, including regulatory restrictions and strategies to increase unit availability in new developments. The proposal is expected to include recommendations for streamlining processes, enhancing investment opportunities, and accelerating project approvals.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism that stronger coordination between the government and private stakeholders would help resolve existing bottlenecks. REHAB leaders also stressed that such collaboration could foster a more dynamic and resilient housing market, benefiting both developers and citizens seeking affordable and quality homes.

They emphasised that revitalising the housing market is not only crucial for economic growth but also for ensuring adequate and affordable housing for Bangladesh’s rapidly urbanising population.
