The much-anticipated bilateral cricket series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, originally scheduled for March 2026, has been officially postponed due to regional instability and logistical challenges affecting travel. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed in a statement that the series, which was to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is now planned for the latter part of 2026.
The six-match white-ball series was set to comprise three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and three One Day Internationals (ODIs). According to the original schedule, the T20Is were to be held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on 13, 15, and 17 March, while the ODIs were slated for the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on 20, 22, and 25 March.
Preparations for the series had already been completed at both venues, with support from the Emirates Cricket Board and all necessary approvals in place. However, unforeseen circumstances at the beginning of March disrupted travel plans for both teams and created significant logistical challenges in staging the matches.
In response, the Afghanistan Cricket Board conducted multiple consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including the Emirates Cricket Board and the management of both venues. Initially, the feasibility of continuing the series was assessed, but unresolved issues ultimately led to the decision to postpone.
ACB emphasised that the UAE remains the preferred location for the rescheduled series, and both boards will coordinate to announce the revised dates in due course.
The original schedule and proposed new timeline are summarised below:
| Match Type | Original Date | Original Venue | Proposed Timeline | Proposed Venue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T20I 1 | 13 March 2026 | Sharjah Cricket Stadium | Late 2026 | Sharjah Cricket Stadium |
| T20I 2 | 15 March 2026 | Sharjah Cricket Stadium | Late 2026 | Sharjah Cricket Stadium |
| T20I 3 | 17 March 2026 | Sharjah Cricket Stadium | Late 2026 | Sharjah Cricket Stadium |
| ODI 1 | 20 March 2026 | Dubai International Cricket Stadium | Late 2026 | Dubai International Cricket Stadium |
| ODI 2 | 22 March 2026 | Dubai International Cricket Stadium | Late 2026 | Dubai International Cricket Stadium |
| ODI 3 | 25 March 2026 | Dubai International Cricket Stadium | Late 2026 | Dubai International Cricket Stadium |
The postponement, though disappointing for fans of both teams, ensures that player safety and smooth execution remain top priorities. Both Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are expected to resume preparations according to the new schedule once confirmed.
Cricket enthusiasts can look forward to the series in the UAE later this year, with both teams likely to be in peak form for an exciting contest of skill and strategy.
