At least 32 people, including children, were injured in a drone strike near Bahrain’s capital, Manama, in what the state-run Bahrain News Agency has described as a “cowardly attack.” The incident, reportedly carried out by Iranian drones, occurred on Monday, 9 March, and has sent shockwaves across the kingdom, heightening concerns over regional security in the Gulf.
According to the Ministry of Health, all those injured are Bahraini citizens. Among the wounded is a 17-year-old girl who sustained severe head and eye injuries. The youngest victim is a two-month-old infant, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the strike and the human cost of escalating tensions in the Middle East.
| Age Group | Number Injured | Condition | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adults | 22 | Moderate to serious | Receiving treatment in specialised hospitals |
| Teenagers | 1 (17-year-old girl) | Critical | Severe head and eye trauma, emergency surgery required |
| Infants | 1 (2 months) | Serious | Under intensive care |
| Total | 32 | 4 critical | Several undergoing urgent operations |
The Ministry of Health reported that four of the injured are in critical condition and require immediate surgical intervention. All victims are being treated at local specialised hospitals under intensive monitoring. The attack also caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure, compounding the humanitarian impact.
Bahrain’s government has condemned the strike as a deliberate act of aggression and pledged to provide the highest level of medical care to all victims. Security forces have tightened measures in Manama and surrounding areas, with military and civil authorities on high alert for any potential follow-up attacks. Investigators are working to determine how the drones were able to breach Bahrain’s air defences and reach their target.
International media have linked the incident to heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf, where disputes between Iran and its neighbouring states have intensified in recent months. The drone strike has sparked widespread public outrage in Bahrain and prompted officials to reassess national security protocols to prevent further civilian casualties.
Defence authorities emphasise that while Bahrain’s air defence systems were operational, the precise method by which the drones struck their intended targets is still under review. Intelligence and security agencies are collaborating to map the trajectory and origin of the attack, ensuring accountability and reinforcing safeguards.
Analysts warn that such incidents could destabilise the already fragile security situation in the Gulf, potentially prompting further militarisation and heightening regional conflict risks. Public sentiment in Bahrain reflects deep concern, with citizens calling for swift government action to deter future assaults.
This attack underscores the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles in conflict zones and the urgent need for robust civil protection measures in geopolitically sensitive regions.
