Despite the continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will proceed according to schedule, senior officials from the world football governing body have affirmed. FIFA has reiterated that preparations for the tournament remain firmly on track, even as regional conflicts raise questions about the participation of certain nations.

Speaking during a visit to the International Broadcast Centre in Dallas, Heimo Schirgi, FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasised that the scale and significance of the World Cup make it an event that cannot simply be halted. He expressed confidence that ongoing geopolitical disputes would ultimately be resolved before the tournament begins.

According to Schirgi, the World Cup represents the largest global sporting event, bringing together millions of fans, broadcasters, and stakeholders from around the world. As such, the governing body continues to work closely with host nations, international organisations, and security partners to ensure the tournament proceeds smoothly.

However, the volatile situation in the Middle East has prompted particular attention regarding the participation of Iran. The country’s involvement in escalating tensions with Israel and the United States has led to speculation about potential logistical or diplomatic complications, especially concerning travel restrictions and international sporting regulations.

FIFA has stated that it is monitoring the situation closely. Officials confirmed that the organisation maintains regular communication with international partners and host-country authorities, reviewing developments daily. Any decisions regarding team participation would take into account security considerations, visa regulations, and international sporting protocols.

On the sporting front, Iran has already secured qualification for the tournament through the Asian qualifying rounds. The team has been placed in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. According to the provisional schedule, matches involving the group will be staged in several major American cities.

The following table summarises the key details of Group G:

The 2026 tournament will mark a historic expansion of the competition. For the first time, the World Cup will feature 48 teams instead of the traditional 32, significantly increasing the number of matches and participating nations. The event will also be unique in its hosting arrangement, with matches staged across three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Organisers expect the expanded tournament to attract unprecedented global attention, with dozens of cities involved and stadium capacities reaching record levels. Infrastructure upgrades, broadcasting facilities, and security planning are already underway across the host nations.

While geopolitical tensions remain a matter of concern for international sports governance, FIFA officials have stressed that contingency planning is in place. For now, the organisation maintains its position that the 2026 World Cup will go ahead as planned, with the aim of celebrating football on the world’s biggest stage.
