Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra Jonas has once again reflected on her journey from Indian cinema to the Western entertainment industry, describing the challenges, determination, and inspiration that shaped her international career.
Speaking on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast, Chopra explained that while working in India, she often felt creatively and professionally constrained. Inspired by the success of Mindy Kaling and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in gaining visibility in American pop culture, she began considering whether Indian actors could carve out a more substantial presence in international cinema.
Chopra emphasised that leaving Bollywood and building a career in the Western entertainment world was far from easy. She recounted the obstacles she faced in establishing herself in a completely new market:
“Nothing comes easily. Everyone has their own struggles. It’s not that I was always in difficult situations, but you learn to adapt to them. When life gets tough, you can choose to rebuild yourself.”
She added that embracing change and facing challenges head-on has been a constant in her life:
“I have always believed in bringing change. When circumstances are difficult, we can lift our heads and move forward. We suffer, we learn, and then we take a new path. I have done this many times in my career.”
Chopra described starting afresh in Hollywood as an opportunity to create her own path from scratch. With no established blueprint, she relied on hard work, skill, and professionalism, ensuring that she could perform on equal footing with any director or co-star.
Now aged 43, Chopra has spent nearly seven years in Western entertainment and has decided to return to Bollywood. Her upcoming film “Varanasi”, directed by S. S. Rajamouli, will see her starring alongside Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The movie is tentatively scheduled for release on 7 April 2027.
In addition to her film work, Chopra is set to make a prominent appearance at the Oscars as a presenter, reflecting her continued engagement with global cinema.
