According to multiple anonymous sources cited by the Financial Times on Saturday, France and Italy have formally contacted Tehran to negotiate protective measures for commercial shipping. Three officials familiar with the discussions noted that the initiative focuses on resuming energy exports without further escalation, even as shipping companies continue to rely on Western naval forces for potential security coverage.

French President Emmanuel Macron has reportedly spoken with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, stating:

“If the situation stabilises, France may participate in providing security for its vessels navigating the strait.”

Meanwhile, Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed that European nations are attempting dialogue with Tehran to allow safe passage for non-belligerent nations’ ships.

The United Kingdom, while monitoring the situation closely, is not engaging directly with Iran. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, currently in Saudi Arabia, is discussing regional oil supply issues with Gulf states. European countries have generally criticised U.S.–Israeli attacks but seek to avoid direct military involvement.
