A violent clash sparked by a dispute over local social dominance erupted in Magura’s Sreepur upazila, leaving at least five people injured and causing extensive damage to property. The confrontation, which involved the supporters of two local political figures, also saw fifteen houses and a commercial shop vandalised. The incident has left the local community gripped by tension.
The outbreak occurred on Monday evening along the paved road in front of the residence of one Israil Master in Chandikhali village. According to local residents and police sources, a long-standing feud had persisted between Sirajul Islam, the president of the Chandikhali village 4th ward unit of the BNP, and Asad Mallick, the former president of the Ghaeshpur Union Juba Dal (Volunteers’ Party).
The hostility boiled over at around half past seven in the evening. Two supporters of Sirajul Islam, identified as forty-year-old Imdadul and fifty-year-old Akul, were returning home from Langalbandh Bazar when they were intercepted near Israil Master’s house. According to allegations, several men loyal to Asad Mallick—including Hasib, Ziku, Asadul, and Rahmat—armed themselves with local weapons and launched a physical assault, leaving the two men severely injured.
As news of the attack spread rapidly through the village, supporters of Sirajul Islam mobilized with indigenous weapons and confronted the opposing faction. This immediate retaliation resulted in further casualties, with three members of Asad Mallick’s camp—Siraj, Alam, and Amirul—sustaining injuries during the ensuing street brawl.
The injured individuals were promptly transported for medical treatment. Some were admitted to the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, while others were transferred to the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital for advanced care.
Amidst the chaos, at least fifteen residential properties and a local shop suffered severe structural damage from vandalism. Affected properties belonging to Sirajul Islam’s supporters included the homes of Montu, Rashed, Sohel, Wasim, Mukhtar, Sobuj, and a shop owned by Miraj Sheikh. Meanwhile, properties belonging to Asad Mallick’s faction, such as the homes of Sohrab Khan, Ashraf Khan, Mohidul Molla, Mir Kashem, Rafiqul Islam, and Mozammel, were similarly targeted and ransacked.
Mohammad Oli Mia, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreepur Police Station, confirmed that law enforcement units rushed to the scene immediately after receiving reports of the violence. Police successfully brought the situation under control, and the area is currently reported to be calm. To prevent any further escalation or untoward incidents, additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain public order. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings regarding the incident.
