Football Dispute Turns Fatal in Sirajganj

A dispute over a local football match allegedly ended in a fatal stabbing in Sirajganj’s Raiganj upazila, leaving a 26-year-old man dead and prompting police to arrest one suspect while launching a search for the alleged attacker.

The incident took place at around 10:30 pm on Sunday in Kalinja village under Pangasi Union. The victim, Ilias Khan, 26, was the son of Sattar Khan and a resident of the same village. Police later detained Md Russell, son of Abdul Aziz, in connection with the incident.

According to local residents, tensions began earlier on Sunday afternoon during a football match on a village playground. What started as a disagreement among players and spectators reportedly escalated into a heated argument. Such informal football matches are a common form of recreation in rural communities, often drawing large crowds of local residents. While they usually strengthen social bonds, disagreements over decisions or conduct can occasionally spark confrontations.

Witnesses said the initial dispute centred on the football game before developing into a verbal altercation involving Russell and Ilias Khan, who were close relatives. The disagreement was reportedly linked to Siam Ahmed, Russell’s son. Local people intervened and managed to calm the situation, allowing those involved to leave the scene.

However, the tension did not subside. Later that night, members of both sides reportedly became involved in another confrontation. During the clash, Siam allegedly attacked Ilias with a sharp knife, stabbing him in the chest.

Villagers immediately rushed to rescue the injured man and attempted to take him to hospital for emergency treatment. Despite their efforts, Ilias succumbed to his injuries on the way, according to local accounts.

The killing has left the local community shocked, particularly because those involved were reportedly related. Residents said the incident highlights how seemingly minor disagreements can rapidly escalate into deadly violence if left unresolved.

Officer-in-Charge Md Ahsanuzzaman of Raiganj Police Station said officers were dispatched to the village immediately after receiving information about the incident. Police brought the situation under control and recovered the victim’s body, which has since been sent to a hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.

He added that Md Russell was arrested from Sirajganj town in the early hours following the incident. Meanwhile, Siam, who is alleged to have carried out the stabbing, has been absconding since the attack. Police have launched an operation to locate and arrest him.

Authorities said preparations are underway to file a formal case, while the investigation continues to establish the full sequence of events and determine the responsibilities of everyone involved. Police have urged anyone with relevant information to cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to bring the remaining suspect to justice.
