A Dhaka court has granted a further two-day remand for Md. Afzal Naser, a former director and dismissed official of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). The order pertains to a murder case filed at Uttara East Police Station involving the death of an individual named Mahmudul Hasan during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
On Monday, 27 April 2026, the accused was produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court following the completion of a previous four-day remand period. The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ashraful Alam of Uttara East Police Station, submitted a prayer for a fresh seven-day remand to facilitate a thorough investigation.
During the hearing, Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoza Suman argued in favour of the remand on behalf of the state. After considering the submissions, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted a two-day remand. This follows a prior four-day remand granted on 23 April in connection with the same case.
According to case documents, the victim, Mahmudul Hasan, participated in a procession as part of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on 5 August 2024. At approximately 4:00 pm, as the protesters reached the paved road beneath the Azampur Foot Overbridge on the eastern side of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, they were allegedly intercepted by armed individuals.
The prosecution alleges that the accused, along with several unidentified accomplices, opened fire on the demonstrators. Mahmudul Hasan sustained critical gunshot wounds and collapsed at the scene. He was subsequently rushed to the Kuwait Bangladesh Charity Government Hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him dead. Following the incident, the victim’s maternal uncle filed a formal murder charge at Uttara East Police Station.
The arrest of Md. Afzal Naser was carried out by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Police in the early hours of 30 March 2026, from a residence on Road 12, Mirpur DOHS. Since his apprehension, he has been implicated in multiple cases across different jurisdictions.
