From the 1950s to the 1980s, countless Bangla songs became deeply rooted in the hearts of listeners—songs that continue to resonate even today. While many remember the singers who lent their voices, far fewer recall the lyricists whose words truly shaped these masterpieces. Among these unforgettable creators stands Gauriprasanna Majumdar, a lyric poet whose contributions remain etched into the foundation of Bangla music.
Two of his works—Coffee House-er Sei Adda Ta and Muche Jaowa Dinguli—earned places in the list of the greatest Bangla songs of all time. A student of English literature, he once translated Kalidasa’s Meghaduta into English during his college years. Although he aspired to be a poet, fate guided him toward becoming one of the most influential lyricists in Bangla musical history.
His early success arrived through the film Agnipariksha (1954), scoring songs such as ‘Ke Tumi Amare Dako’ and ‘Gane Mor Kon Indradhanur’. His ability to weave poetic sentiment into Anupam Ghatak’s compositions remains widely admired. Later, legendary composer Sachin Dev Barman encouraged him to write more songs, leading to gems like ‘Banshi Shune Ar Kaj Nai’, which conveys complex emotions of longing, grief and defiance.
His creative partnership with Nachiketa Ghosh produced numerous timeless songs—‘Neer Chhoto Khoti Nei’, ‘Nishirat Baka Chand Aakashe’, ‘Moubone Aaj Mou Jomechhe’ and many more. Gauriprasanna’s writing blended emotional clarity with lyrical sensitivity, often transforming simple melodies into profound poetic experiences.
He collaborated with celebrated musicians such as Hemanta Mukherjee, Kishore Kumar, Rahul Dev Burman and Bappi Lahiri. Songs like ‘Ei Path Jodi Na Shesh Hoy’, ‘Je Banshi Venge Gechhe’, ‘Ei Raat Tomar Amar’ and ‘Sedino Akashe Chhilo Koto Tara’ demonstrate his lyrical depth and poetic command. The latter was born from a moment of emotional recollection as he sat by a seashore, watching flowers fall from nearby trees—a memory that inspired an entire song.
His talents extended to films such as Antony Firingee (1967) and Chirodiner (1969), yielding unforgettable pieces like ‘Ami Yamini Tumi Shashi He’ and the soul-stirring ‘Manush Khun Hole Pore’. He later penned ‘Eyi Mom Jochonay’ at the request of Uttam Kumar, crafting a lyrical composition full of shimmering imagery and vivid expression.
During the Liberation War, he wrote ‘Shono Ekti Mujiborer Theke’ on the back of a cigarette packet—an extraordinary act reflecting his artistic urgency. His final monumental creation, Coffee House-er Sei Adda Ta, was written while he battled cancer, completing the concluding lines just before departing for treatment.
Born on 5 December 1925 in Gopalnagar of Pabna, Gauriprasanna remains a luminary whose poetic spirit continues to illuminate Bangla music.
