ICC Grants Official Recognition to Nepal Premier League

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally granted official sanction to the Nepal Premier League (NPL), elevating the status of Nepal’s marquee Franchise Twenty20 tournament. The landmark development was confirmed through an official press release issued by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Friday, 16 October 2026.
This formal endorsement from global cricket’s governing body marks a major turning point for Nepalese cricket. By securing ICC sanctioning, the NPL gains enhanced credibility across the international cricket ecosystem. The official status simplifies regulatory clearances, allowing high-profile overseas cricketers, coaches, and support staff to participate without administrative hurdles, thereby raising the overall competitive standard of the competition.
In its statement, CAN highlighted that the ICC sanction will play a pivotal role in developing domestic cricket infrastructure, fostering homegrown talent, and strengthening Nepal’s brand identity on the international stage. The governing body expressed its sincere gratitude to the ICC for its continued partnership and support in expanding the league’s global reach.
Adding significant stardust to the upcoming third edition is Bangladeshi star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The veteran cricketer has signed up to feature for Pokhara Avengers, making him one of the headline attractions of the tournament. Although Shakib has been intermittent in international and domestic red-ball cricket over the past two years, he remains a highly sought-after commodity in global franchise leagues.
The third edition of the eight-team tournament is scheduled to commence on 26 October 2026, culminating in a grand final on 21 November 2026. The NPL has enjoyed rapid growth since its inception. Janakpur Bolts claimed the inaugural championship title in 2024, whilst Lumbini Lions lifted the trophy in the second edition in 2025. With official ICC backing and the inclusion of seasoned international stars, the upcoming season promises to deliver a new benchmark for cricket in the region.
