Three Dead Including Infant in Separate Sylhet Highway Crashes

A tragic sequence of road accidents on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway in Jaintiapur upazila claimed three lives, including that of a three-month-old infant, within a span of just fifteen minutes on Saturday afternoon. At least ten other passengers sustained severe injuries across both incidents and remain under emergency care at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The first collision occurred around 12:15 pm on Saturday, 17 October 2026, in the Ferryghat Katagang area along the busy highway. A tourist coach bound for the popular resort town of Jaflong collided head-on with a stone-laden lorry travelling in the opposite direction. The force of the impact crumpled the front of the bus, trapping several passengers inside. Local residents rushed to the scene to assist in rescuing the injured from the wreckage and arranging immediate transport to hospital.
Two victims—an unidentified man and woman—succumbed to their injuries whilst undergoing emergency treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Sub-Inspector Anwarul Islam, who oversees security at the hospital, confirmed the fatalities, noting that efforts are underway to establish the identities of the deceased. Amongst the injured receiving treatment from the bus collision are 48-year-old Kawsar, a resident of Pallabi Road under Kotwali Police Station, alongside his 10-year-old daughter Atisha and 16-year-old son Alif.
A second violent smash occurred merely fifteen minutes later, at approximately 12:30 pm, near the Biraimara Bridge section of the same highway. Two private cars collided head-on at high speed, leaving multiple occupants badly hurt. Emergency responders and bystanders pulled the victims from the damaged vehicles and dispatched them to the hospital.
Tragically, three-month-old Ayat, the infant son of Hasanuzzaman from West Makherpada village in Gowainghat upazila, died during treatment. The child’s 35-year-old mother, Marjana Akter, suffered severe trauma and remains in critical condition. Sub-Inspector Najmul Haq of Tamabil Highway Police Station stated that law enforcement officers responded to both locations to manage traffic flow and clear the debris. He added that formal legal proceedings regarding the two collisions are currently in progress to determine liability and exact causes.
