Snatch-and-Grab Fatality: Court Grants Bail to Accused in Headteacher Death

A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to Md Rakib Hossain, 24, an accused in the tragic death of primary school headteacher Ranjila Parvin, who lost her life after falling from a battery-powered rickshaw during a violent snatch-and-grab attempt outside the National Parliament House.

The order was delivered by Judge Ayesha Akter Moushumi of the Dhaka Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court following a hearing on Sunday afternoon. Defense lawyer Md Mehedi Hasan Mazumder confirmed the judicial order, stating that the court granted bail to Rakib until the police submit their formal investigation report. The court set a bail bond of 5,000 BDT for his release. Defense counsel further noted that as there are no other pending charges or cases registered against Rakib, he is expected to be released from custody shortly.

The fatal incident occurred during the early hours of 29 August near the South Plaza of the National Parliament complex in the capital. The victim, 56-year-old Ranjila Parvin, was serving as the headteacher of Bagbari Girls’ Government Primary School in Gabtali Upazila, Bogura. She had travelled to the capital alongside her husband to seek medical treatment.

Upon arriving at the Kalyanpur bus terminal early in the morning, the couple boarded an electric rickshaw to travel onwards to a nearby hospital. As their vehicle was passing the high-security National Parliament area, two assailants riding a motorcycle approached them and forcefully yanked the handbag Ranjila was holding. The sudden violence of the pull violently ejected her from the moving rickshaw, causing her to strike the tarmac forcefully and sustain critical head trauma. Attending physicians declared her dead shortly after she was rushed to a medical facility.

Following the tragic event, the victim’s husband, Abdul Matin, lodged a formal murder case at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

Street snatching by motorcycle-borne miscreants remains a persistent safety concern across urban transit routes in Dhaka, particularly during pre-dawn hours when commuter presence is sparse. Incidents involving violent bag-snatching from open-air passenger vehicles like rickshaws frequently result in severe, sometimes fatal injuries to commuters, prompting repeated calls from civil society for intensified police patrols around key thoroughfares.
