Morocco’s ambitions of rewriting footballing history have suffered a significant setback on the eve of their highly anticipated World Cup quarter-final clash against France. The African representatives received a major blow with the confirmation that star midfielder Ismael Saibari has been ruled out of the blockbuster fixture due to a persistent thigh injury.
The Atlas Lions are scheduled to face France tonight at 2:00 am at the Boston Stadium in a high-stakes encounter. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Morocco’s head coach, Mohamed Ouahabi, confirmed that Saibari had failed a late fitness test. “With the exception of Ismael Saibari, the entire squad is fit and ready for the match,” Ouahabi told reporters. “This particular fixture has simply come too soon for his recovery. However, we remain optimistic about welcoming him back into the squad for the remaining stages of the tournament.”
Saibari, who recently secured a high-profile transfer to German giants Bayern Munich, has been in sensational form throughout the current World Cup campaign. His tactical intelligence and clinical finishing saw him score in all three group-stage fixtures. He further cemented his status as a national hero in the round of 32 by calmly converting the winning penalty in a dramatic shootout against the Netherlands.
The influential playmaker picked up the injury during Morocco’s commanding 3-0 victory over Canada in the round of 16, forcing an early substitution. Striker Soufiane Rahimi, who came off the bench to score Morocco’s third goal in that match, remains an option as the coaching staff shuffles the pack to fill the creative void.
Coach Ouahabi chose to keep his tactical cards close to his chest, refusing to reveal who would replace Saibari in the starting line-up. Instead, he hinted at a tactical surprise designed to destabilise the French system. “I have a surprise up my sleeve specifically tailored for our approach against France,” Ouahabi remarked with confidence.
The upcoming fixture offers Morocco a golden opportunity for footballing redemption. In the 2022 Qatar World Cup, their historic semi-final run was brought to a heartbreaking end following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of France. Despite the historical subplots, Ouahabi was adamant that his team is looking forward rather than dwelling on past disappointments.
“France enter the tie as the definitive favourites, but we will exhaust every ounce of our energy to secure a victory,” Ouahabi stated. “Our ultimate objective is to win the World Cup itself. We are stepping onto the pitch tonight with a winning mindset. We do not harbour a defeatist mentality where we console ourselves simply by having reached this stage.”
