An internal dispute within the local ranks of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Bhola took a fatal turn over the weekend, leaving a ward-level leader severely injured and a young party activist dead following a swift cycle of retribution.
The violence erupted on Saturday evening at Anandabazar in Rajapur Union, situated within Bhola Sadar Upazila. According to local sources and eyewitnesses, an ongoing personal feud between Md Hossain Howlader, 55—popularly known as Hossain Manager—and 25-year-old party worker Md Asif escalated during a local salish (informal mediation meeting). Hossain, who serves as the president of Ward No. 7 BNP in Rajapur Union, was addressing the gathering when Asif confronted him, sparking a heated altercation.
In the heat of the argument, Asif allegedly produced a sharp weapon and stabbed Hossain before attempting to flee the scene. Bystanders immediately rushed the bleeding BNP leader to Bhola Sadar Hospital. However, as news of the attack spread across the village, false rumours quickly circulated claiming that Hossain had succumbed to his injuries.
Driven by anger and the alarming rumours, a crowd of local residents tracked down Asif and subjected him to a severe beating. Upon receiving reports of the mob attack, law enforcement officers intervened, rescued an injured Asif, and admitted him to Bhola Sadar Hospital at approximately 8:45 pm. Hossain had been brought to the same facility earlier, around 7:45 pm.
Despite receiving emergency care, Asif died from his injuries early on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment. Hossain, having received preliminary medical attention, was initially transferred to Barishal and subsequently moved to a specialised hospital in Dhaka as his condition deteriorated.

Background details reveal that friction had been brewing between the two men for a considerable period. Local sources confirmed that Hossain had previously assisted police in detaining Asif over prior grievances. Hossain himself was subsequently imprisoned in connection with a separate politically motivated case. Both men had only recently been released on bail before their fateful encounter at Anandabazar.
Confirming the party affiliations, Md Shahjahan Baipari, President of Rajapur Union BNP, stated that whilst Asif actively participated in party activities, he held no official committee position. He added that the violent mob action occurred spontaneously after news of the stabbing spread. Police records also indicate that Asif had several existing cases registered against him under the Narcotics Control Act.
Mohammad Monirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Bhola Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed that official investigations into both the stabbing and the subsequent mob beating are underway. Inquests and post-mortem examinations have been initiated, though no formal case had been filed by Sunday afternoon, nor had relatives arrived to claim Asif’s body.
