Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from international Twenty20 (T20) cricket. The 35-year-old pacer stated that he wants to prioritise Australia’s upcoming Test schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Starc has represented Australia in 65 T20 internationals, with his most recent appearance at the 2024 T20 World Cup. He was also part of Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning squad. Over his T20 career, he has taken 79 wickets, the second-highest tally in Australian T20 history. His career-best figures came against the West Indies in 2022, where he took 4 wickets for 20 runs.

On social media, Starc reflected on his T20 career: “Test cricket has always been the most important format for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed every T20 match I played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup. It wasn’t just the joy of winning the trophy, but the incredible teammates and unforgettable memories that made it so special.”

From mid-2026 onwards, Australia will focus heavily on Test cricket, including:

Reflecting on his retirement decision, Starc added: “With the Test series in India, the Ashes, and the ODI World Cup in 2027 ahead, I feel this is the best choice to keep myself fit and in top rhythm. At the same time, it will give our bowling group ample opportunity to prepare ahead of the T20 World Cup.”

Starc’s retirement marks the end of a prolific T20 career for Australia, allowing him to focus fully on Test cricket and major upcoming tournaments while giving younger bowlers a chance to step up in the T20 format.
