In a tragic incident in Rangpur, a mother allegedly strangled her one-and-a-half-year-old son before ending her own life. The bodies of both victims were discovered on Saturday evening, 14 March, at their residence in the Sajapur area of Ward 28.

The deceased have been identified as Suchana Ghosh, aged 40, and her young son, Joydeb Ghosh. Suchana’s husband, Shankar Ghosh, 45, is a physically disabled grocery shop owner. The family also includes a daughter, Pushpita Ghosh, who is currently studying in class ten.

According to police reports, Suchana Ghosh allegedly strangled her toddler and then committed suicide by hanging herself with a scarf. Pushpita Ghosh first discovered the tragic scene while peering through a window.

The Rangpur Metropolitan Police recovered the bodies and have sent them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Shankar Ghosh told reporters that his wife had been suffering from long-term mental health issues, including depression, and had received treatment on multiple occasions. He believes that her psychological distress contributed to the fatal actions.

Tajhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Ataur Rahman, stated that the family had faced financial difficulties and domestic tensions. He noted that it remains unclear whether the tragedy was primarily caused by familial disputes or Suchana’s mental health condition, and that the investigation will determine the exact circumstances. The victims’ bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue pending further examination.
