The harrowing details of the abduction and murder of a seven-year-old boy, Rifat, have sent shockwaves through the Kadamtali and Gendaria districts of Dhaka. What began as a mundane dispute over a missing mobile phone culminated in a cold-blooded killing, an overnight vigil over a corpse, and a desperate attempt to dispose of the evidence in a rubbish heap. The prime suspect, Maya Begum (also known as Laboni), a local school attendant, is now in police custody after a stray piece of clothing led investigators to her door.
The tragedy unfolded last Tuesday when Rifat’s mother, Munni Akhtar, reported to the Kadamtali Police Station that her son had failed to return home after going out to play. A General Diary (GD) was promptly filed, and a search operation commenced.
The investigation took a grim turn on Wednesday evening when a plastic drum containing the remains of a young child was discovered amidst a pile of refuse in the Loharpul area of Gendaria. Upon being summoned to the station, a devastated Munni Akhtar confirmed the identity of the victim as her missing son.
The breakthrough in the case came not from sophisticated forensic tools, but from the keen eyes of investigators and the victim’s sister. During the examination of the crime scene, police recovered a girl’s camise (tunic) inside the drum.
| Evidence Type | Detail | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Evidence | Plastic rice drum | Used to conceal and transport the body. |
| Key Clue | Child’s Camise (Tunic) | Identified by Rifat’s sister as belonging to the suspect’s daughter. |
| Digital Evidence | CCTV Footage | Captured the suspect transporting the drum via auto-rickshaw. |
| Confession | Verbal Admission | Maya Begum admitted to the assault and disposal. |
When shown the garment, Rifat’s sister noted that she had seen their neighbour’s daughter wearing an identical outfit. When police questioned Maya Begum’s daughter, she initially claimed the tunic was hers but was unable to produce it upon request. This discrepancy turned the spotlight firmly onto Maya Begum.
Under intensive interrogation by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, Maya Begum confessed to the crime. She revealed that a long-standing feud had existed between the two families following the theft of her mobile phone several months prior. Maya had baselessly accused Rifat’s sister of the theft, leading to bitter altercations.
On Tuesday, spotting Rifat alone, Maya allegedly lured him into her home with the promise of snacks. Once inside, she confronted the child about the stolen phone. Dissatisfied with his innocent denials, she reportedly struck him with such force that his head collided with a bedstead, causing fatal injuries. In a chilling display of composure, she hid the body in a plastic rice drum, guarded it throughout the night, and hired an auto-rickshaw the following morning to dump the remains in a distant landfill.
Maya Begum, whose husband works in a rickshaw garage, has been formally arrested. The victim’s father, Jahangir Hossain, an auto-rickshaw driver, now awaits justice for his son in a case that highlights the devastating consequences of unchecked communal vitriol.
