Users in Bangladesh and several other countries reported severe difficulties accessing their Facebook accounts from desktop and laptop computers from around 1:40 pm today. While the web version of the social media platform appeared completely non-functional for many, access via the mobile application remained partially available, albeit unstable.
The global service disruption blocked millions from their profiles. Disgruntled users quickly migrated to alternative social media platforms, such as X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn, to vent their frustrations and report that they were completely unable to sign in to Facebook via web browsers on their personal computers.
Desktop users attempting to load the website were greeted by a stark system error message. The notification stated: “Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.” Meanwhile, the situation on the mobile app was far from seamless. Although some users could log in, many noted that the interface remained frozen on previously loaded pages, failing to refresh or display new content.
As rumours of an administrative ban began to circulate locally, internet service providers (ISPs) and international internet gateway companies moved swiftly to clarify the situation. Industry leaders confirmed that there was absolutely no disruption in internet connectivity from the domestic end. Crucially, telecom infrastructure managers confirmed they had not received any government or regulatory instruction to block access to the platform.
Sumon Ahmed Sabir, Chief Technology Officer of Fiber@Home, one of Bangladesh’s largest wholesale internet bandwidth providers, stated that the domestic internet supply chain remained entirely uncompromised. The localized infrastructure was running smoothly, pointing to a centralised issue within Meta’s network.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, could not be reached immediately for comment, and their official status page initially lacked specific data. It remains unclear whether the disruption was triggered by a routine software deployment error, a server-side technical glitch, or an external cyber-attack. The exact geographic extent of the outage and the total number of affected users globally could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.
