Remembering Poet Samudra Gupta (Abdul Mannan Badsha)

Samudra Gupta, the celebrated poet, columnist and writer renowned for his distinctive contribution to the Sahajiya tradition of Bengali poetry, remains one of the most remarkable literary voices in Bangladesh. “Samudra Gupta” was his literary pseudonym; his real name was Abdul Mannan Badsha.

He was born on 23 June 1946 in Hasil village of Raiganj Upazila, Sirajganj District. From the mid-1960s, he began writing poetry, short stories, essays, literary criticism and newspaper columns under the name Samudra Gupta, gradually establishing himself as a unique and influential figure in Bengali literature.

His life was marked by hardship, resilience and extraordinary diversity. At different stages, he worked as a printing press employee, a sawmill manager, a substitute worker in a jute mill, an executive at a development organisation, a pharmaceutical and healthcare entrepreneur, a proofreader and a journalist. These varied professional experiences enriched his literary outlook, lending his works a profound sense of realism, compassion and humanity.

Although he had been an active presence in Bangladesh’s literary scene since the 1960s, his first poetry collection, Faces Scorched by Sunlight (Rod Jholsano Mukh), was published in 1977. The demands and challenges of his professional life prevented him from devoting himself entirely to literature. Even so, he remained steadfast in his literary pursuits, continuing to write with unwavering dedication and passion until his final days.

Samudra Gupta was a poet of hope and humanism. He consciously chose to keep his poetry free from unnecessary obscurity, preferring a language that was simple, natural and emotionally resonant. Through this accessible style, he sought to bring the beauty of Bengali poetry closer to ordinary readers. His Sahajiya poetic voice, which stood apart from the complexity often associated with modernist poetry, is widely regarded as a significant and enduring contribution to Bengali literature.

His poems have been translated into numerous languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Assamese, Nepali, Chinese, Sinhala, French, English, Japanese and Norwegian, introducing his work to readers beyond Bangladesh. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to poetry, he received numerous honours and accolades both at home and abroad.

On 19 July 2008, Bengali literature lost one of its most devoted and distinctive poets. Yet his lucid poetic language, deep humanism and lifelong commitment to literature continue to inspire generations of readers and writers alike.

On the anniversary of his passing, we pay our deepest tribute to Samudra Gupta. May his memory, literary legacy and unwavering devotion to poetry continue to illuminate and inspire the world of Bengali literature for generations to come.
