Prime suspect in Satkhira mob-beating death finally arrested

Police have apprehended the prime suspect in connection with the fatal mob beating of a 38-year-old man in Debhata upazila under Satkhira district. Fazlul Huq Amini, aged 45, was taken into custody at approximately 11:00 pm on Saturday, 17 October 2026, during a targeted raid at a relative’s residence in Faridpur village within neighbouring Kaliganj upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Debhata Police Station, HM Shaheen, confirmed the arrest, stating that the operation was conducted jointly by personnel from the Debhata Circle, Kaliganj Police Station, Debhata Police Station, and Special Response Battalion-6 (SRB-6). The coordinated strike followed intelligence tracking Amini’s movements after he fled the immediate locality to evade law enforcement.

The victim, Wahiduzzaman Shamim, son of Shamsur Rahman from Subarnabad village in Debhata upazila, was brutally beaten to death on Tuesday under allegations of hurting religious sentiments. The incident sparked widespread shock and tension across the area, prompting immediate police intervention to restore order and recover the victim’s body for post-mortem examinations.

Following the killing, the victim’s elder brother, Abdul Jalil, lodged a formal murder case at Debhata Police Station on Thursday night. The complaint named Fazlul Huq Amini as the principal accused alongside nine other identified individuals, while also charging 200 to 250 unnamed persons involved in the violent mob attack.

Prior to Amini’s capture, law enforcement officers launched extensive drives across various parts of the district, leading to the arrest of two other named suspects listed as accused numbers five and six in the First Information Report (FIR)—Moktar Hossain Khan, aged 53, and Asadul Islam Mollya, aged 46. Both individuals were subsequently remanded into judicial custody through court proceedings.

Police officials emphasized that the arrest of the primary accused marks a critical step forward in the investigation. Security forces continue to carry out targeted raids across Satkhira to identify and apprehend the remaining named suspects and mob participants, ensuring all those involved face legal proceedings.
