Bangladesh has expressed profound sorrow following the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In an official statement issued on Monday, 2 March, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the targeted killing as a violation of international law and norms. The statement also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Iranian people.

According to the statement, the government of Bangladesh is deeply concerned that the attack represents a breach of established international principles. "Bangladesh extends sincere sympathy to the fraternal people of Iran," the statement said, emphasising that violence cannot yield a sustainable resolution. It further underscored that only dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to international law can resolve conflicts.

The attack, reportedly carried out through a joint military strike by Israel and the United States, resulted in the death of Ayatollah Khamenei on Sunday. Following his demise, Iranian authorities declared a 40-day period of national mourning, along with a seven-day government holiday.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian toll continues to rise. According to the Iranian Red Crescent, a total of 555 people have been killed since the onset of the hostilities last Saturday. In addition, a separate attack on a girls’ school in Minab on Saturday has reportedly claimed over 150 lives, highlighting the severe impact on civilians.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh reiterated that conflict and aggression only deepen divisions. It urged the international community to uphold principles of law and human rights to prevent further escalation. Bangladesh’s response reflects the country’s longstanding commitment to diplomatic resolution and regional stability.

The recent attacks, particularly the killing of a sitting Supreme Leader, mark a significant escalation in international tensions, with repercussions expected for regional security and diplomatic relations. The Bangladeshi government’s statement signals its condemnation of the violence while advocating for peaceful negotiation and legal adherence on the global stage.
