A tragic road accident in the early hours of Sunday claimed two lives and left at least two others injured after a passenger bus lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in the Barisal district.
The incident occurred around 5:30am in the Batajor area of Gournadi Upazila along the Barisal–Dhaka highway. According to highway police, the ill-fated bus, operated by “Greenview Paribahan”, was travelling from Dhaka towards Barguna when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and fall into a ditch beside the highway.
Two passengers died on the spot. The deceased were identified as Iti Chakraborty (45), wife of Gurudas Chakraborty from Kaunia area of Barisal city, and Pabitra Majumdar (50), owner of “Sundori Jewellers” located in Kattapotti area. Their bodies were later recovered from the wreckage.
Several other passengers sustained injuries, including Gurudas Chakraborty (45), his daughter Upoma Chakraborty (16), and at least one additional traveller. Emergency responders from the Gournadi Fire Service rushed to the scene shortly after receiving the alert. The injured were rescued from the damaged bus and transported to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex for initial medical treatment.
Officials from the highway police stated that preliminary findings suggest the driver may have lost control due to excessive speed or possible mechanical failure, although a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash. The bus was later retrieved from the ditch using a recovery vehicle in the afternoon.
Law enforcement authorities confirmed that necessary legal procedures have been initiated in connection with the incident. The accident once again highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on the busy Barisal–Dhaka highway, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is low and traffic conditions can be unpredictable.
