Passengers travelling by metro rail and long-distance trains will now be eligible for a 25% fare discount, applicable to three categories of travellers: senior citizens, people with disabilities, and students. The discount will be provided upon presentation of a valid identification card.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Shipping, and Railways Sheikh Rabiul Alam confirmed the initiative.

“Since the Eid festival is approaching, we are making every effort to implement this scheme before the holiday,” the minister said. “While it may be slightly challenging, we aim to ensure that by the upcoming Qurbani Eid, passengers can enjoy the 25% discount on tickets.”

Online Ticketing and Discount Implementation

Addressing queries about online ticketing, the minister clarified that discounted tickets will be available digitally as well. “There will be an option on the online platform for eligible passengers,” he said.

Eligibility criteria are as follows:

Passenger CategoryRequired ID CardDiscount Percentage
Senior citizens (65+)Government-issued ID card25%
StudentsValid student ID card25%
Persons with disabilitiesDisability ID card25%

Broader Rail Development Plans

Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam also discussed ongoing improvements to the railway network. “Our goal is comprehensive development of the rail system. Current projects will be accelerated to increase train speed and reduce travel time,” he explained. He added that several passenger-friendly initiatives are being introduced to improve service quality.

To manage the surge in travellers during Eid, authorities plan to deploy 85–86 locomotives, ensuring minimal disruption and adherence to schedules.

Ensuring Smooth Road and Waterway Travel

The minister further noted that the government has taken substantial measures to facilitate safe and smooth travel on roads and waterways during the festival. “For nearly ten days, we have been coordinating with all relevant ministries and field teams, including mobile units, the navy, highway police, and the army,” he said.

On fare regulation, the minister emphasised strict monitoring: “Bus and launch operators have pledged to maintain fares. We will ensure this commitment is upheld, leaving no room for exploitation.”

With these measures, authorities aim to provide safe, affordable, and efficient travel for all passengers during the peak Eid season.
